Maureen Lockett

Maureen Lockett’s Last AGM as President of The Ladies Golf Union

It is just thirty years since I started working as a volunteer in golf.  An almost continuous involvement in many aspects of golf  which has culminated in two absorbing and interesting years as President of The Ladies’ Golf Union.

This has enabled me to travel to many countries in support of elite ladies’ golf and to meet many of my “heroes and heroines” in wonderful places. As an R & A Qualified Referee, I also had the opportunity of meeting some superb golfers, and some temperamental ones!

I have always been proud to be part of the Hallamshire Golf Club, where I have been a member for more than fifty years, and I appreciate the support I have always received.     Julie Clark,  Adrienne Kay and Yorkshire colleagues are  joining me in Glasgow for the AGM where we are delighted that Alison Nicholas, an Honorary Member of Hallamshire Golf Club and currently the Captain of the European Solheim Cup Team, is to be the guest speaker, which will round off a special occasion.

**************

Three Hallamshire Ladies travelled to Glasgow to support Maureen. It was Maureen’s finale – her last meeting as President of the L.G.U. Quite a special moment because Maureen has been involved with the organization of Ladies’ golf at it’s highest level for 30 years. It was also very fitting that Alison had been invited to speak at this meeting as Maureen had played a big part in Alison’s career as an amateur and on into her professional career. Alison’s talk gave us all an interesting insight into her various tasks and duties as Captain in the build up to the Solheim Cup.

Maureen was presened with a caricature of herself and also a beautiful piece of modern glass in recognition of her dedication to Ladies Golf.

Another notable Hallamshire lady member is  Mary EverardMary is a famous British Lady Golfer achieving a handicap of +4 at the height of her career.  Mary has won every amateur international honour which Britain could offer.  She played in four Curtis Cup matches. She won the British Ladies Stroke Play Championship and the English Championship. She played in numerous international matches.  She was the Yorkshire LCGA Captain in 1971.  She now says serious golf is a thing of the past but she still enjoys playing at Hallamshire.  She was Captain of Hallamshire in 2004 following a family line of Captains from when the Club was founded.
